Our History

Sam Rabinovich founds a small weaving plant in São Roque, in the interior of the State of São Paulo.

Fiação e Tecelagem Campo Belo, founded by Sam Rabinovich, the father of Jacks and Clotilde, comes on stream. According to the Foundation Charter, this factory was set up to "carry on industry and trade in textile fibers in general, with the possibility of extending to other intermediary, similar or connected activities, which may come to be considered in its interest". Campo Belo was responsible for introducing natural and artificial and synthetic fibers blends into Brazil and contributing in a decisive way to innumerous advancements in fabric dyeing processes in the country.

Mendel and Eliezer Steinbruch, brothers of Alegria, begin running the São Roque weaving mill. Alegria and her husband Samuel, Sam Rabinovich's brother, had died shortly before in an airplane accident. The company was named Têxtil Elizabeth, in honor of Mendel and Eliezer's mother. The company was a fundamental reference in the Group's history and was responsible for introducing major advances in Brazilian spinning and weaving. Under the Elizabeth trademark, the company gained prominence in the production of circular knit and flat woven fabrics -most especially those in nylon (polyamides). In 1990, it was elected the Company of the Year in the Biggest and Best issue (Melhores e Maiores) of the Exame business magazine, the most respected publication in its type in Brazil.

The Steinbruch and Rabinovich families join forces to build the first joint enterprise, the Brasibel textile company, which began operating with leased machinery and facilities.

Steinbruch and Rabinovich acquired what, at the time, was the largest worsted mill in South America: Lanifício Varam. The Vicunha Group was born at this point, the result of an old, solid family and commercial relationship. The Brasibel partnership proprietors decided to expand their businesses. They joined the traditional woolen yarns and fine worsteds from Varam, with the blends from Campo Belo and the 100% woven polyester filament fabrics (tergais) from Brasibel and from Elizabeth. The products that resulted from this union of tradition, elegance and technical experience had an extraordinary result and gained recognition and prestige on the principal markets in the country. The new "Vicunha" trademark, inspired by one of the former Varam's fine worsted brands, begins to gain prominence.

Finobrasa, Fiação Nordeste do Brasil, was founded in Fortaleza, through a partnership between the Steinbruch and Rabinovich families with local groups, from the State of Ceara, the Otochs and Baquits. With the significant increase in production capacity, the Group increased its share of the domestic market and began to compete aggressively on the international market.

Têxtil RV was founded in partnership with the Renner group from the State of Rio Grande do Sul.

Vicunha Têxtil acquires the Textília and TBT weaving mills.

The Vicunha Group acquires Fibra, one of the principal textile industries in the country, at the time owned by the Snia-Viscosa Italian group. The Groups broadened and verticalized development and production of artificial and synthetic fibers with this acquisition.

The Vicunha Group acquires the controlling interest in Hering Têxtil do Nordeste, the largest manufacturer of knitted undershirts, and it founds Fibrasil. With a plant situated in the Paulista municipal, 16 km from Recife, this unit occupies an area of 150,000 m2 and has modern textile facilities.

Vicunha United States founded, strengthening the Vicunha Group's presence on the American market.

As a further move in the business expansion strategy, Vicunha starts activities in Europe through the company Alpaca Import-Export Sarl with headquarters in Switzerland.

On June 29 2001, with the aim of coordinating efforts to reduce costs, simplify administration, create a more agile organization and increase economic results, the Corporation carried out important changes to its operating and corporate structures, which included in the following principal actions:

  • Transforming the Vicunha Group (textile area) by merging the wholly owned subsidiary companies into a single corporate unit (Vicunha Têxtil S.A.).
  • Restructuring and re-organizing the Administrative, Operating and Commercial areas, consolidating them and adjusting them to the Corporation's new operating characteristics.

This was a fundamentally important decision to create and strengthen corporate identity, and turned Vicunha into the largest textile organization in Latin America.

  • Vicunha Têxtil's various initiatives in the area of social responsibility resulted in the Corporation receiving the " Abitfashion 2002 Social Responsibility " award. ("Responsabilidade Social Abitfashion 2002"). The "Vicunha Educação" project was also recognized by the Brazilian Institute for Citizenship Development (Instituto Brasileiro de Desenvolvimento da Cidadania ) and the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce which honored Vicunha Têxtil with the title "Brazil Export Citizenship". This is testimony to the fact that Vicunha Têxtil's concern is not only with modernizing its processes and with the quality of its products but extends to forming active citizens who are aware of their rights and responsibilities.

Vicunha Têxtil reaches year end displaying a significant growth in its revenues. This is a result of focused resource and investment concentration efforts in its mainstream business operations, such as:

  • Sale of industrial threads division to manufacturer Coats Corrente S/A

  • Redirection of the Yarn business unit, which discontinued the sale of Yarns to the national market and used its installed operation capacity to the Indigo, Denim and Knits core business units.

  • Withdrawal from participation in Fibra Dupont Sudamérica S/A

  • Expansion of international markets operations and restructuring of the European market operation, directly managing product trade in that continent.

Vicunha consolidated partnership with renowned designers and showed the latest fashion trends on the catwalks as São Paulo Fashion Week’s master sponsor, Brazil’s major fashion event in its calendar.

2003 was also especially important for the accomplishment and expansion of prominent social programs. Vicunha was awarded a special honor prize at the Prêmio Cidadania Brasil Exportação 2003 (2003 Brazil Citizenship Export Award) and earned a European Green Seal OEKO-TEX certificate upgrade, from the indigo fabrics line to the denim products line.

Still in 2004 Vicunha sets up a partnership with Fundação Projeto Pescar (Fishing Project Foundation) and opens four plants in the states of Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte and São Paulo, providing benefits, supporting education and preparation of young people aged between 15 and 18 for the labor market.

Vicunha bets on Brazilian fashion and launches Brazil in the international scenario both by taking part in events and associating with Brazilian designers. This interaction is topped by Vicunha’s participation as São Paulo Fashion Week’s master sponsor and its presence in trade fairs like TexWorld (Paris), Magic Show (Las Vegas), Colombiatex (Colombia), Munich Fabrics Start (Germany) and Intertextile Shanghai (China).

Vicunha celebrates its 38th anniversary and amongst its recent achievements lie the seeds which will contribute to sowing the creation of a more powerful and dynamic corporation. This is highlighted by the opening of the Medelin office in Colombia (VTA Andina) and the Shanghai office in China, reinforcing Vicunha’s presence in international markets. Other reasons for the celebration were the State of São Paulo, Americana-based Fibers and Filaments Unit nomination for ISO 9001:2000 certification, the OEKO TEX Green Seal renewal for indigo and denim fabrics lines and the achievement of four categories in the Prêmio Destaque 2005 (2005 Highlight Award).

The VICUNHA BEACH area at the 2005-2006 São Paulo Fashion Week is confirmed as one of the hottest spots at the event for fashionistas, the public and the media. In this edition VICUNHA hosted the Future Village, an effort to display a handcraft project with great emphasis on social inclusion and education.

In 2005 CEO Mr. Ricardo Steinbruch takes over Vicunha Têxtil and its presidency once again. The partnership with the Rabinovich family comes to an end.
